Summary: Jin leaves for America. Yamapi and Kame say goodbye.
Sometimes when you've sold your soul to the entertainment business, even when you want to make time for your friends, you can't.
Jin has been a member of Johnny's long enough to understand this, so he's not too hurt when it's only his family there at the airport to see him off. Yamapi is still in Kyoto and can't make it, though Jin did make a little time to pay him a quick visit.
They didn't really talk about him leaving, ("It'd be nice if you could come see me off." "Yeah, it would be.") and they didn't really talk about work much either, ("I wonder if the others are going to take more of a leading role while you're gone." "Are you kidding? Kame's just going to whore the camera ten times worse.") save for discussing the stupid things that Jin's bandmates had done since Yamapi had been away for filming, ("Kame of all people went on camera with his shirt buttoned up wrong the other day. Live. When it was pointed out to him, he looked like he was going to explode. I've got it on tape, we should watch it together sometime.")
Yamapi talked about Kyoto, and how he was having fun but got a bit lonely sometimes, and Jin mentioned the giant orange sign in a window that he'd seen of Yamapi across from Kyoto station, with words plastered right across his face. Yamapi tried to feign annoyance over that, then got distracted by telling Jin about interesting things he'd seen on his evening walks.
Jin completely forgot about how soon he was leaving. Time with Yamapi did that to him. When they were together, they weren't two of Japan's most wanted pop stars, just a pair of dumb best friends who hadn't even hit the mid-twenties yet. And the rest of the world didn't matter.
It was as he was headed back to Kyoto station that Jin realized it'd be a while before he could feel that again.
As he passed by the poster of Yamapi in the store window, he waved goodbye to it, the way he hadn't been able to wave goodbye to him that morning ("See you soon. Mail me, okay?" "Definitely. See you later.").
That was okay, though. That was just one more thing to look forward to coming back to.
----
Obviously, it was an important flight. It was one that was going to change his life, and Jin couldn't afford to miss it. He'd been terrified of doing so, ever since Junno had made a dumb crack about expecting Jin to be late for something so crucial. Therefore, he'd dragged his entire family up at 4:30 in the morning to see him off on a plane that left at 7:45 am.
His brother had fallen asleep in his chair. There was still an hour before he had to be on the flight, and his mom wouldn't stop telling him how proud she was that he was doing this. It was kind of embarrassing, but he didn't mind that so much; the problem was that it was starting to make his throat feel itchy, and his eyes prickle.
Eventually he told his family that he was going to the bathroom. On the way, he kept telling himself that it was only six months, maybe it'd be a year at the most, they could always come to visit him, or maybe he could come back for a little while during the holidays, it was his own decision, it wasn't anything to get upset over, he was a man, he didn't need to cry, he'd be back after he was finished with studying, so what was wrong?
There was one person occupying a stall in the men's bathroom, so Jin just locked himself in another one and rubbed at his eyes until he heard them leave.
He didn't really want to deal with human contact right now. Once he heard the outside door click shut, Jin emerged from the cubicle, and stopped to look at himself in the mirror. It wasn't too obvious that he'd been teary moments before.
He tried smiling widely at the mirror, experimentally.
"You're going to study overseas." He told his reflection, "You're excited, right? This is a chance that a lot of people don't get, so I bet you really appreciate it. It'll be fun too! And then, when you come back in six months time, you can wow everyone with your amazing English skills, and they'll never be able to call you stupid ever, ever again."
The smile in the reflection looked more genuine now.
"Actually," He said, and his speech started to speed up the way it always did when he got excited, "It'll be great. Because when you come back, everyone will want you to help them with their English, and then KAT-TUN will be able to go on a big, proper tour of America and I can write English songs for it and then we'll become world famous!"
Someone walked in while he was still making strange faces, and giving his mirror-self the thumbs up, so he quickly lowered his hands.
But when he turned to go, he found himself staring straight at Kamenashi.
Kame's posture was confident and cool, but his facial features were twisted into a look of unease. Jin wasn't sure which one to believe.
"Kame?" Was all he could really force out, and then after a few moments of silence, "I thought you guys couldn't come?"
"We can't." Came Kamenashi's rather matter-of-fact reply, "But one of us had to see you off regardless of that."
"I see." Nothing followed his reply, and they stared at one another awkwardly. It seemed like everything important they'd had to say had already been said on the phone. Then Kame, almost roughly, held out a small band of metal to him.
"Here. This is for you. From all of us."
Jin took it gingerly and held it up to eye-height. It was a pinky ring, nothing special, but delicate in design. He grinned appreciatively.
"I like it. It's classy." He slipped it on.
"We all got one. All five of us." Kame said, and although the words were casual, Jin could tell from the slightly hurried undertone he caught wind of that Kamenashi didn't want him to get the wrong idea about it. "This way you'll remember that we're waiting for you back home."
Jin admired the ring on his finger for a moment, "Thanks. Why can you always think of such cool things to say?"
He didn't reply to that. Instead, Kame finally smiled - a small, but very real smile, "You know, Ueda started crying about you yesterday. And then Koki pointed it out, so he got all sulky and stalked off."
Jin chuckled and rubbed the back of his head, "Say bye to him for me, okay? Tell him not to be sad, because I'm definitely coming back." Then, "Well, I guess we both need to get going. You've gotta go to work and I have a flight to catch."
Kamenashi nodded, "Right. Okay. Don't forget to call once in a while, okay?"
"Sure. Bye."
"See you later."
It was as he turned to leave, taking hold of the door handle, that Kame grabbed his arm, slim fingers digging in tight.
"Jin."
He turned back, looking right into Kame's face, which was set into a stoney expression. Even so, Jin could almost feel in a way, just from how Kame's hand gripped his arm, what the younger man wanted to but couldn't say.
'Don't go. You don't really have to go, right? I can't do this all by myself, I'm only 20, I can't be the front man all alone, how am I supposed to keep leading the others if you're not here? I can't do this without Jin. Don't leave us. Don't leave me.'
Instead, Kame told him, "Good luck."
Jin nodded, "Thanks. Good luck to you too."
They parted ways, and soon enough, Jin was on his flight. He'd waved to his family as he'd passed into passengers only territory, until he couldn't see them anymore.
There were standard announcements and a safety video before the plane began to travel along the runway, picking up speed, until it was able to lift into the air. Jin fiddled with the ring on his pinkie and then waved good bye to Japan, watching it grow smaller and smaller, until the plane flew up above the clouds.
'Bye, guys. See you soon.'

I really wish it happened that way. I hope it did. ♥
I really wanted to write something... happy, where they could say goodbye to one another without too much trauma. And where Jin lets them all know he'll work hard for them, then come back better than ever.
And where the other let him know that they'll all wait for him and give him somewhere return to.
I hope it can make people feel better, even though I'm really still not that greater right, 'coz eventually everything'll be okay~
It's nice to read something that tells what Jin could have felt as he goes abroad. It's actually refreshing to read because it makes me understand the reason why Jin has to leave.
And I loved the awkwardness with Kame, they're aren't fighting any more, but they're not exactly friends again, yet Jin knows Kame so well that he knows Kame what's Kame thinking. It's very cute.
Awesome fic. XD
Yeah. The part with Kame is kind of, "I still care, and I still kinda need you around, but I can't tell you that yet". And also because no matter what Kame wants us to think, he's still the youngest. ^^;
cause I imagine jin would feel like that right now.
partly happy cause he's going to study, partly sad because I'm sure he will miss his friends and also the spotlight ^^
I thought it was a great fic. As much as I love pairings and everything, the fact that you made Kame mentally tell Jin not to leave and actually tell him good luck made me really happy...most people would have written it as a love scene but I liked it better your way. :D
Anyways, this fic gave me a lot of hope for Jin's return. Thank you for writing it so awesomely XD <3 :)
I like pairings toooo~~ n.n; But sometimes they just don't work for what I want to write as well as friendship. Or awkward friendship with the Jin-Kame part.
Kame can be a bitchy diva sometimes, since he's so obsessed with success (You can totally tell) but he's cool. I know he wouldn't allow himself to weigh Jin down with his anxieties at such an important time. He'd just wish him well. Not to mention he'd be too embarrassed to tell Jin not to go. >D
REALLY?? That's what I was aiming for. *Twirls* I want this awful Jin-leaving thing to bring everyone in the fandom together, so we can all wait for him return the same way we're waiting for Uchi to come back to NEWS and K8. In the meantime, we can support the other KAT-TUN boys, and hope that Jin's having a great time and will have some fantastic stories to tell when he comes home. <3
... I totally just wrote too much. n.n; Good thing you sound friendly. *Goes overboard explaining herself*
it made me cry, but in a good way!! because i want jin to be happy and to pursue his dreams.. and he WILL be back...
i do hope things ended on a positive note, like it does in your fic. its so sweet. ♥
Jin will be happy, I bet, and then come back ready to wow us with his amazing now language skills~ But with 6 months, who knows what he'll end up saying? ^^;
Positive is good~ <3 Thank you soooo much~~ Here, have a love train! ♥♥♥♥
But Jin is optimistic. ;)
Also lo at you thinking of Jin's penis. XDDD *Hug*
