Summary: The creepy thing about Koyama and Shige is that they seem to be able to read each other's minds.




When Shige comes running into work apologizing profusely about how late he is, Yamapi just waves his hand and laughs and says it's fine; they haven't started yet, so he's not really late. He should just relax, calm down a bit, get his breath back and do something about his messy hair.

Shige lets out a deep sigh, slumps into a couch and rubs his temple. It's then that Yamapi notices his shirt is on inside out.
"Shige," He says, and points out the mistake. "Your shirt."
Shige looks down and flushes bright pink, quickly pulling it off and putting it on the right way around.

"Ugh, how embarrassing. Everyone on the train must've been staring at me." His voice sounds like he's cringing and sighing all at once. "I woke up so late today that I barely even had time to get dressed before I had to be out the door."

At this, Koyama gets up from his chair and says, "I'll get you some," and walks out of the room. Yamapi stares after him with the Yamapi version of bewilderment - that is, not looking particularly confused at all - but Shige just yawns and stretches, as if Koyama hadn't just said something completely out of the blue that didn't fit any of the conversations in his vicinity.

He comes back in a few minutes with a packaged sandwich, which he gives to Shige. Shige takes it with a smile and a thank you and unwraps it, taking a big bite and chewing slowly. Yamapi waits until he's totally preoccupied with it before he goes and asks Koyama in a low voice, "Why did you just go and buy Shige a sandwich?"
Koyama looks at Yamapi with a sweetly puzzled smile and replies, "Because he said he was hungry."

Yamapi doesn't argue, though he's pretty sure that Shige never said anything like that. However, as the day wears on, he doesn't even remember it even happened. Plenty of pretty weird stuff happens in NEWS all the time. This is only another forgettable drop in the bucket.



The weather is terrible, but fortunately the photo shoot doesn't involve being outside, so it needn't be postponed. The members all arrive slightly damp, aside from Tegoshi. When asked how he managed to stay dry, his reply is, "Because I came in the car." Yamapi says that he came in a car too and still got rained on, so Tegoshi looks thoughtful for a while, then says, "I guess it's just because I didn't want to get wet, ne."

They all choose to ignore him after he says that, figuring that it's probably not advisable to try and figure out why the phenomena surrounding Tegoshi occur. It could be unhealthy. Or dangerous.

The photo shoot progresses without any hitches and by the time they finish, the rain has let up, and they all decide to go and get a late lunch together before they return to business. Once they're all full, they go and pay the bill and leave. That's when it happens: almost the moment they step out of the restaurant, the rain starts to pour down again. Koyama looks around wildly and starts to squeak and flail, but no real words come out of his mouth.

"What's he doing?" Massu asks, putting his umbrella up, and taking a step away to avoid getting hit in the face with an arm.
"Maybe he's doing a sun dance." Tegoshi says in a chirpy voice. He looks a bit like he's contemplating joining in, so Ryo puts a hand on his shoulder and tells him to put up his umbrella before he gets wet.

Shige sighs, and after muttering about Koyama being a spastic, pulls a red umbrella from his bag and hands it to him.
"Stop panicking. I saw you forget it at the photo shoot, so I brought it with me."
Koyama calms down immediately, and takes the umbrella from Shige.

"Thank you!" He says brightly, "I'm so lucky I've got you around to take care of me."
Tegoshi looks at Shige curiously. "How did you know that's what was wrong?" He asks, cocking his head.
Shige raises an eyebrow and looks at Tegoshi as if he's an idiot. "It was raining and he had no umbrella." He answers.

It made sense, Tegoshi reasons with himself. Perhaps more than the idea of doing a sun dance did. But on the other hand, no one else had figured out why Koyama was making such a fuss. And in such a strange manner too.
He dismisses it in the end anyway. Since Shige is so smart, he must be able to figure stuff like this out quickly, Tegoshi decides. He doesn't let it bother him again.



Out shopping one day during their free time, Koyama and Shige run into Ryo. He's waiting to cross the road, so they hurry through the crowd of people on the street towards him, before the cars can stop for the lights.

"Ah, Ryo-chan!" Koyama calls out, and he stops and turns, finally catching sight of them.
"I thought you were still in Osaka?" Shige asks, and Ryo shakes his head.
"No, I got back yesterday. What are you two up to? Together as usual, I see." From anyone else, the last part of that sentence would sound like nothing more than an observation, but Ryo's lip twitches upwards into a little smirk as he says it, and somehow it ends up sounding like an insult.

Koyama doesn't notice.

"Yeah, Shige and I usually spend our free time together." He says, and Ryo raises his eyebrows slightly. Shige wonders if Koyama has been taking lessons from Tegoshi in how to not be able to read the mood.

"We were just going to go and look at clothes." He interrupts, trying to sound as casual as possible, "Would you like to come with us, Nishikido-kun?"
"If you insist." Ryo replies, but the little half smile he doesn't realize he does when he's actually happy about something appears on his face.

They chat about what he's been up to in Osaka while they browse clothes until Koyama finds a jacket he really likes. After driving them both insane by listing and weighing up every possible pro and con of buying it, he finally decides to get it, and pulls his remaining cash out of his pocket. Then he sighs, and his eyes flicker towards Ryo, then Shige, and then back to Ryo again.

Shige immediately says, "Don't, Nishikido-kun. Knowing him, he'll take months to pay you back."
"Huh?" Ryo replies, brow creasing. "What the hell are you talking about?"
Shige sighs. "Koyama doesn't have enough money to buy the jacket. I'm just saying, don't lend him any because he never remembers to pay you back."
Usually Ryo doesn't like to ask questions, because he hates to admit it when he doesn't know things, but this time he's just too baffled.

"How do you know he doesn't have enough money?" He asks, totally confused as to how Shige could know that, when Koyama could have only just figured it out himself.
Shige snorts. "Well, why else would he ask you to lend him money?" And then he turns to Koyama and says, "You know you'll forget to pay him back for it, and the jacket isn't going anywhere. Just come back tomorrow and buy it yourself."
Koyama sighs and nods, while Ryo just stands there, staring at Shige dumbstruck.

"But..." He protests weakly to deaf ears, "But he didn't ask me to lend him anything..."
They leave the store without making a purchase, and Ryo follows them out the door, still thoroughly confused.


Unlike Tegoshi and Yamapi, however, Ryo is far less talented at dismissing things, and the first chance he gets when Koyama and Shige aren't around, he brings the topic up.
"Those two are completely nuts." He declares, catching the attention of the three other NEWS members in the room.

"Who?" Massu asks, and Ryo clicks his tongue.
"Shige and Koyama. They're totally insane. Haven't you noticed that weird thing they do?" He says. Tegoshi frowns.

"What weird thing in particular?" He asks, as though implying that the two of them do a variety of strange things, and he can't possibly guess to which one Ryo is referring.
"You know. That thing!" Ryo says impatiently, waving his hands around. He's worried that Koyama and Shige will come back any moment, and he'll have to discontinue the topic. Ryo isn't usually one for talking about people behind their backs, but in some cases it just seems appropriate. This is one of those times.

"You know... That thing where one of them says something that seems like it makes no sense, but then it apparently does make sense, but it only makes sense to them, and it makes no sense to us, even though it seems like..." Ryo trails off, realizing that if he keeps talking, the one who isn't making any sense will be him. But from the way that realisation appears to be dawning on Tegoshi and Yamapi's faces - Massu still looks confused, but then Massu always does - it appears that he's explained well enough.

"Like the time with the umbrella." Tegoshi says, with understanding.
"And the sandwich." Yamapi adds.
The three are silent for a while. Then, "They are very close." Tegoshi provides a suggestion. "Maybe they can read each other's minds?" It's a long shot, but when it comes to Koyama and Shige, that kind of thing could well be true.

"It's member love." Yamapi says, nodding as though to affirm his own decision. "It must be."
"They're just freaks." Ryo says, not happy with the conclusions the other two have come up with. Tegoshi's is too far-fetched, and Yamapi's isn't mean enough.

"We could just ask them." Massu pipes up, finally joining in the conversation.
Ryo is just about to tell him what a dumb idea that is and exactly why they shouldn't, when Tegoshi says, "Ah, Massu is right! Instead of speculating, we could just hear it right from then. Good thinking!"

Ryo sighs. Tegoshi is so impressionable. He begins to start his speech about why it's not a good idea again, when Koyama and Shige walk back into the room - together, as usual - and Tegoshi is already out of his chair and talking to them.

"Ne, Kei-chan, Shige," He says, "We were just wondering. You know that thing you do where one of you does or says something and then the other one does or says something that seems really weird, but then the other one of you acts like that's totally what you expected? What does it mean?"

There's a long pause. Koyama just looks blank, and Shige seems to have developed a sudden headache. Neither of them appear to have understood what he's trying to say, so Tegoshi gives examples.
"Like when you knew Koyama was looking for his umbrella. Or the time with the sandwich that Yamapi was talking about."
"And the other day with the jacket." Ryo adds, figuring that he may as well put his example in since Tegoshi's already gone and asked.

Shige keeps frowning for a while, but then his features untwist and it seems as if he's finally understood.
"Oh, I think I see what you're talking about." He says. Tegoshi beams. He's always happy when he succeeds in something. But then Shige continues with, "But it doesn't mean anything. It's nothing special. I just know Koyama really well."
Koyama nods and gives Shige a sappy smile, and says, "We've practically grown up together. So I know Shige really well too."

"Well enough to read his mind?" Tegoshi asks, but his question goes unanswered, and Koyama and Shige go off to a corner and launch into a conversation that seems to be about the merits of certain brands of cat foods. It spirals into an debate, and Koyama actually wins for once when he reminds Shige that the only cat he's ever had isn't real.
Ryo sighs.
"I guess we'll never find out what that thing they do is." He concludes, and Yamapi nods.

Tegoshi doesn't say anything, and for a moment Ryo wonders if he's still hung up on the mind reading idea, but then he says, "It could be some kind of best friend code-speak."
And Ryo finds he can't argue with that.
